Updating the WebView – Instructions and Notes
To ensure websites in the TheFlex Browser are displayed securely and correctly, it is important that the Android WebView on your device is kept up to date.
How can I update the WebView?
-
Automatic Update:
Normally, the Android WebView updates automatically via the Google Play Store. Open the Play Store, search for "Android System WebView" and update to the latest version if possible. -
Chrome-based (Android 7–9):
On Android 7–9, the WebView is provided by Google Chrome. Just update the Chrome app in the Play Store.
Where can I see my current WebView version?
-
In TheFlex:
Go to TheFlex device settings (“Settings” → “Device Information”) to see the currently used WebView version. -
In the Android system:
Open Android Settings → Apps → "Android System WebView" → Version number is shown there.
What to do if you can't update via Play Store?
- On certain devices (e.g., without Play Store or in company environments with MDM/restrictions), updating via Play Store may not be possible.
- In these cases, the current WebView version can be installed manually via APK:
- The latest Android System WebView APKs are available at APKMirror
- Important: The APK must match your Android version and device architecture (arm64, armeabi-v7a, etc.).
- In case of doubt, please contact your IT administrator or our support.
When is a manual APK update required?
- If the Play Store is missing or blocked.
- If an old WebView version still appears after updating.
- If issues such as a “white screen” or “page not loading” occur even after updates.
Tip: Most loading issues (“white screen”) are usually due to an outdated WebView. See FAQ: White Screen.
